1 day class
The family cow is an integral part of a sustainable homestead providing dairy products and meat as well as fertilizer. In this one-day class you will learn how important a milk cow is to the homestead and the place it plays in the whole of sustainability. We will teach you the essentials of how to care for a milk cow. We begin by explaining the advantages of having a milk cow and then proceed to the following topics: breeds of milk cows, purchasing a milk cow, necessary equipment, housing and fencing, pasture management and feeds, health issues, breeding, calving and hands-on milking of the family cow during the class. This class will involve outdoor activities. Please bring a wide-brimmed hat and wear long sleeves. Also, bring appropriate clothing for cold or inclement weather. No shorts or sandals, please.
This class is from 9 a.m – 5 p.m.
