3 day class
In this workshop you will knit a child’s size, seamless yoke sweater. You will learn to use Elizabeth Zimmermann’s percentage system (EPS) for designing garments to your own desired measurements. This simple sweater will be a child-size version of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s “weekend sweater.”
This course is the foundation for more advanced projects such as Scandinavian style sweaters with color-patterned yokes, Gansey style sweaters with textured designs, steeked color-patterned cardigans knit in the round, and sweaters that incorporate a variety of different style sleeves. It will also teach you how to design and knit garments according to your own specifications.
Before beginning this project, you will knit a gauge to determine the size needles you will use. You may bring your own needles or purchase at the time of class. You will use 16″ and 24″ circulars for the body of the sweater and double pointed needles for the sleeves (unless you use the Magic Loop method). If you have needles, we suggest bringing sizes 6 through 9 to determine correct gauge or you can purchase needles at the time of class.
The class will meet in three sessions. After each session students will work at home to reach a specified point in the project, in order to learn and use new skills the following class session. Yarn, Elizabeth Zimmermann’s “weekend sweater” and “child’s Fair Isle yoke sweater pattern” and the sweater pattern we will use in class will be provided and are included in the cost of materials.
Note: Before taking this class you should have mastered the basics of knitting, (knit and purl), have knitted at least one garment and be able to knit in the round on double pointed needles or using the “Magic Loop” method.
