10 day class
This is a ten-day class. The first week runs from Monday through Saturday and the second week runs Monday through Thursday. (No class on Sunday).
Each student will build their own hard maple Split Top Roubo workbench, using the Benchcrafted M series leg-vise and tail-vise (includes the criss-cross). The overall size of the bench is 36″ tall, 26″ wide, and 7 feet long. (If someone wants to change the height or length due to special needs we could work with that.)
In this class you will glue up the pre-milled wood for the top, layout and cut the mortise and tenons for the base, layout and cut the dog runs, hand-cut the dovetail for the end-cap, make the sliding support, gap-stop, dogs and install the vises, just to name a few things that will be done in the class.
The Roubo workbench is considered the most utilitarian style workbench for fine furniture makers, having a leg-vise with about 11″ of depth before hitting the vise screw and a large hand-wheel that makes opening and closing the vise a joy to use. A tail-vise with a hand wheel, sliding support or deadman helps hold longer boards when jointing the edges, and the gap stop acts as a planing stop and a tool holder. Plus the 4″ thick hard maple top gives the bench enough weight to keep it from “walking” across the floor when used.
Optional: If you want the walnut accents for the end-cap, leg-vise chop, sliding support and gap stop it will be an additional $110.00.
Please bring the following tools with you to this class:
18” or longer pipe clamps (at least 8, but more if possible)
A low-angle bloke plane or jackplane
A jointer plane or the longest plane you have
This class is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Class size: 6
Prerequisite: Six-Day Foundational Joinery Course
NOTE: This class will close 1 week prior to the start date of the class.
