1 day class
Peggy Doney has been fascinated with color since her first box of crayons. After 20 years of homeschooling, she wondered what to do with all of the left-over chemistry equipment. The answer came after taking a spinning class. Now she enjoys spinning, knitting, silk fusions and dyeing.
For many years, she has been discovering dye colors using triad, gradient, and monochromatic studies. (Triad dyeing is a systematic way to create a variety of colors from three stock colors using simple proportions.) Peggy’s special interest is making accurate recipes that are starting points for matching colors in nature. She loves sharing her passion for fiber and color with others, from her annual fiber arts gathering in her back yard to teaching workshops for guilds, craft schools such as Homestead Fiber Crafts and festivals like the Taos Wool Festival.
In this workshop, you will get hands-on experience measuring and mixing the stock colors into the new colors using the recipe sheets we provide. We will create 63 new hues using the three stock colors and apply them to white, grey, and tan yarns. Along the way, we will explore the math behind the triad, the simple ways to extend the recipes to any amount of fiber you choose, and more. Students will leave this class with a dye recipe notebook containing samples and formulas for 198 acid dye colors! Student notebooks also include notes, formula worksheets and a line to some helpful spreadsheets.
The materials fee for this class is $35 and will be collected at the class.
The instructor will supply: Dyes, a notebook with notes, yarn samples, measuring equipment, sample cards with recipes.
Students will bring: Old clothes and comfortable shoes (not sandals), apron, goggles (optional), pen or pencil.
This class is from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.
