Making Musical Instruments
Learn the art of luthier, the craft of instrument making, while making your own guitar. Making a guitar by hand is very rewarding experience that will further improve your skills as a woodworking.
We have two classes to choose from. For those that don’t have a lot of time but still would like to make an heirloom instrument, the 6-day guitar from a kit is just the class for you. You will learn how to shape the internal parts of the guitar for the best sound all the while perfecting the shape of the neck and finally putting the whole guitar together, learning the intricacies of setting up a guitar. You will leave with a finished guitar at the end of just six days.
If you have more time available, you may want to take the 17-day class, were you will make a guitar, starting literally from scratch. You will thickness the wood, shape the wood, bend the wood all the while learning the intricacies of the luthiers craft.

Build a Guitar by Kit (6-day)Starting with a guitar kit in either Martin, Dreadnaught or OM body style and your choice of tonewoods, in only 6 days you will assemble your guitar. You’ll also learn how to set up your guitar’s playability, and you’ll leave the class on Saturday afternoon with a great-sounding easy playing guitar that you made yourself. We also provide easy-to-follow instructions on how to apply the guitar’s finish at home.
Build a Guitar from Scratch (17-day)Starting with roughly-dimensioned wood, you’ll shape the neck, bridge and internal bracing. You’ll bend the guitar’s sides and install the sound hole rosette, and you will learn how to set the guitar’s playability by shaping the nut and saddle and setting the proper neck relief. At the end of the course, you’ll leave with a great-sounding, easy-playing guitar that you’ve made yourself.
Introduction to Guitar Making
Learn about the essential steps of building a steel-string acoustic guitar. In this class, instructor Joe Slack will demononstrate and discuss how to bend the sides, carving techniques, and various other procedures and techniques that you will use when making a guitar. Joe will also discuss guitar acoustics and what to look for in the various tonewoods.
